Worked like magic!
I don't want to jinx it, but I moved around my computer set up (elevated it off the floor) and rearranged my antennae, and got my dBm down to about -65. Massive improvement, much more reliable, quicker connection.
I've also just discovered the possibility of getting a WiFi "Repeater" to enhance my signal in my apartment. I may try one of those to further improve the situation.
