Wi-98 box can't see my network, but machines on the net can access files on Win-98 bx

I'm trying to dig through a networking problem one layer at a time. My overall problem is that a Win-7 box can't access files on an old Win-98 machine. I'll probably wind up starting another thread regarding that issue.

But in while trying to figure out that problem I've discovered that although the Win-98 machine shows up as a network member, I can't see any of the other newtwork machines from the Win-98 machine. I have no problem seeing and accessing files on the Win-98 box from my XP desktop machine. But if I go to the Win-98 box and attempt to browse the network the only item I see is "Entire Network". If I select that I get an error message box that states "Unable to browse the network" and refers me to the Network Troubleshooter. I can bring up the network troubleshooter and it shows me several radio button options, but if I select one and hit "Next" all I get is an empty window.

So, it appears that I have at least two layers to the problem. Win-98 box can't see my network. Troubleshooter doesn't work (maybe not included when win-98 was installed?).

Interestingly, I have Win-98 running in a virtual machine, and that copy sees the network just fine and can access files from other network members ok.

I'm inclined to believe that something I need didn't get set-up right when Win-98 got (re)installed, but I can't figure out what.
