unable to connect to internet

I had cable internet installed last week. I had DSL previously.
The problem I am having is that my desktop either cannot connect to internet or it is dropped and cannot reconnect. When that happens I connect the Ethernet cable to laptop and I have connection.
I have tried uninstalling the network adapter and reinstall with no success.
I have a Broadcom adapter.
When I run the diagnostic software it shows the EEPROM corrupted.
I tried the jumper thing where you move the jumper over and than put it back it its correct position but that did nothing that I am aware of. The diagnostics still shows it corrupted.
I never had this problem with DSL.
Would buying a pci adapter work?
Thanks
