IPv6 is a standard. Whether it will have more widespread use depends on where you are in the world. If you are planning on working in the US Federal government, then yes. The US Government has mandated IPv6 support and equipment certification on most of the equipment it purchases now. Whether the particular agencies actually implement IPv6 is another discussion. But I would say if the agencies haven't already started implementing IPv6, it'll only be a matter of time; especially since IPv6 has encryption built into its protocol stack compared to IPv4 which doesn't.
