wireless not connecting

I have been trying for days to fix my wireless connection. I have a Linksys Wi Fi router N300 Simplicity (E900). I've followed lots of advice on changing settings. I even reset to factory specs. In the process, somehow my Dell PC now says it's a laptop. My adaptor settings only refer to a wireless connection rather than the SSID (which is broadcasting and says it
says the signal strength is excellent). I've got the feeling I have just enough knowledge to really mess up my computer, but not to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.
