Not much else you can do.

From what I have been able to find, unless that switch is "On", none of the other hardware/software toggles will work.

Have to agree with your Dad about letting a friend look at it.
Unless they have a guide for or personal experience with working on a specific model, it is to easy to break something else that will put the laptop completely out of service.
