Many of the wireless hardware used in SOHO routers have a built in expiration. What I mean by this is the built in antennas are typically not designed to support the power and RF signals being sent to it. As a result, the RF chips inside of the unit typically burn out or degrade due to the signal feed back.
The use of firmware such as DD-WRT which allows you to up the RF output power does not take the above into account. This is one of the reasons why I don't like firmware hacks like this as many times the hardware it is installed in have not been designed to be pushed in this manner.
