Anyhow, as far as your questions I can only presume some generalities. You can send a shutdown command to remote computers, so I assume the main computer is set to do that as part of its shutdown procedure. Likewise, the program 1 on the main computer probably sends a message to the other programs or else "locks" the database when it quits. Unfortunately I don't know enough to be more specific.
