The increased range is a function of what 802.11n brings to the table which is MIMO operation and how the spatial multiplexing is done.

There are a lot of variables to what will cause wireless performance issues with range and reliability. In addition to the building construction materials and ambient RF, it can also come down to the type of wireless NIC being used. In my home setting, I have various wireless capable devices. Most of the devices have no problems with reliability/performance, but there are some that consistently have issues. One of them is an Intel 1030 and another is an Atheros AR9002WB. In the case of the Intel, we were getting poor performance and slow connection times to the wireless network from power up or sleep. Making adjustments to the power management profile of the Intel NIC seemed to have helped the performance problems but the slow connection times remain. The Atheros for some reason just wants to drop off the network. Updated the drivers and still have the same problem. When I get the chance, I'll be replacing these wireless NICs.
