No it's not OK. What you're essentially doing is just putting a NAT device between your PC and the Internet negating any security that router would provide for you. In the security circles, NAT alone is not a security feature.
I would try either updating the firmware, replacing the router, or just not play the game if none of the previous work.
No game is worth compromising your network security over. This means no game should ever require you to open any ports on your firewall in essence punching holes in your security. Until more people stop condoning this sloppy coding from game developers, you'll see more and more of this nonsense going on.
