You first define an ad-hoc wireless network. (See 'Configuring the host computer' in that article; it applies to more than just 802.11b.)
Then 'activate' or 'connect' (don't know exactly what terminology WZC uses) the network and quickly scan for it on the phone. My experience with ad-hoc wireless in XP was that it could be difficult to get working the first time (try, try, try again) but then worked fairly decently afterwards. Initially don't even try to use encryption.
