Sell the cable modem, buy a new high end Wireless-AC router to future proof yourself when you get Wireless AC devices if you do not already have them. If your mobile devices have wireless cards that support the 5Ghz band use that for potentially better performance; all Wireless AC units support 5Ghz alongside the standard 2.4Ghz. Wireless N devices will connect to Wireless AC devices at the highest negotiated speed that both support; based on range, interface, and number of antennas.
As a note Wireless-N hardware might not even be able to give you the full speed of your connection if it's over 100Mbs. Wireless is still inefficient, prone to interface, and performance drops at longer distances.
You won't be able to use adapters without buying a pair and limiting future speeds, plus introducing a lot of hassle and areas of failure.
