Pros of buying a new router to plug into my current router/modem combo?

depends on what you have now and what facilities you need
some provide a media service , can have Harddrives attached and Act as USB print servers
also broadcast wireless on 2.4GHz and 5GHz

5Ghz can solve itnterference problems
