No it's not typical but it can happen. I gave an old Netgear FS105 switch to a friend which finally died about a couple of years ago....could be a few years. Anyways, the switch was about 6 to 8 years old. I had another Netgear switch (GS108Tv1) which is a web managed switch. That one died after about 3 or so years of operation. The GS108T would work for a bit and then would stop passing traffic over port 1. After some diagnostic work, found out the switch was failing. Power cycling would bring things back to normal for a little bit then the same thing would happen. Took advantage of Netgear's lifetime warranty on their ProSafe products and got a replacement. If you want to spend a little more money to possibly get a more reliable switch, I would look at the Dell PowerConnect 2800 series, Cisco 2900 compact switches, or even some Netgear. In the case of the PowerConnect, I have an old PowerConnect 2708 which I bought about 11 years ago with no failures and is still working to this day. I just chose not to use it in my current network.
