I am almost positive I have fixed this. If you have a Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 there is something that you need to know about it's default settings. First of all in regards to Xbox, you will experience lag if you do not do this in your Modem settings.... (This will not work if DHCP is turned off)
DHCP Reservation
Open a web browser.
Enter http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar (Or click the link). Enter the username and password if the gateway asks (admin/motorola).
Select Basic across the top.
Select DHCP from the left.
In the section labeled DHCP Clients, enter the console’s MAC address in the first box. Make sure your Xbox is turned on when doing this so that you will be able to see your primary mac address that your xbox has. It will be located below the box you are typing in along with any other Mac addresses that are plugged into your modem.
In the second box type in the IP Address you want the console to have. (example: 192.168.0.42)
In the Host Name box type in Xbox.
Select Add.
If you did this correctly, under the word "Expires" you will see "Reserved Active" (This means your xbox now has a static IP and will not be renewed every couple of minutes)
What people don't realize about these modem settings is that the IP ADDRESS of your xbox times out after a certain period of time (about 5 minutes or so). So if you are wondering why when you try to make a static IP for your Xbox you can never seem to get an open NAT consistently this is why. Basically the settings on your Surfboard will allow you to give your Xbox a static IP with this method. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR AUTOMATIC SETTINGS UNDER CONFIGURE NETWORK. You do not need to make a static IP this method does that for you. You may change your DNS SERVERS to manual but that is it...Not your IP configs. I hope this fixes people's issues. It did for me and now my Live is fun again because people aren't eating shots left and right. I play Halo and this has fixed the issue.
Also just an FYI you may delete your PC MAC ADDRESS and do the same to your computer to make it static. You won't be able to log into your modem settings for a couple of minutes after you delete your pc mac address but give it a couple minutes and you can log right back in to add your old mac address as it was and change the IP you would like your computer to have.
