Hi guys, its been a while since I was last here
I've been asked to set-up a router based firewall or other parental controls setting to restrict the hours my cousin can get on the internet via his kindle fire.
The router we're using is a TP-link N300, unfortunately I don't have the exact model code to hand but this is a link to the router on the Argos webpage (where we got the router) http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Search...ms/1421664.htm
I understand that the kindle comes with built-in parental controls, however i am also aware that these controls can be undermined by a factory reset,
Now the jargon bits, I started with a parental controls rule to restrict the MAC of the kindle (acquired from the DHCP pool of the router) to only access the internet between 10.30 and 21.00 daily, However, the Kindle seems to ignore the schedule and refuses to connect to the internet, so I turned to the firewall instead, Using the mac address as the host, I wanted to deny all outbound access to the internet outside the schedule (same as above), this appeared to work, until I changed the schedule to only allow access between 3am and half passed (router was reading 1 hour behind due to DST and was convinced that it was 19.30 at this point) when tested with the kindle, I found completely the opposite to the results from the parental controls, the Kindle ignores the firewall rule,
playing around with the firewall I added the deny IP range from 1.0.0.1 - 223.255.255.255, later I added the ports from 1 to the maximum (35655 or something like that?) and the kindle still gets through,
The router has been left with manual enabling of the parental controls but we want this to be an automatic setup so we can enable and forget as my uncle is likely to forget, Kindle based parental controls is not a viable option at this point
am I doing something wrong? is there an easier way? any help would be nice,
Cheers,
