How to enable administrative share in Windows XP?

Hi!

Does anyone here know how to enable the administrative share in Windows XP? I am talking about the c$ in particular, this is the one I want to access. I am a complete newbie when it comes to using administrative shares. But after some research I have managed to enable the administrative share in Windows Vista. But that doesn't help my XP computer.

For those of you looking for this information, here's a short how-to on enable administrative share in Vista:

  1. Open Regedit.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Syste m
  3. Make a new DWORD value.
  4. Name it LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
  5. Right click it and click Modify, and then change "Value data" to 1.

Now you should be able to access the administrative share of your Vista computer.

Practical example of what this does:
  1. Open the Run prompt (Win+R)
  2. Type in \\192.168.0.3\c$ and press Enter.
You should be able to browse through the file and folder structure of the C: drive on the 192.168.0.3 computer for which you have enabled the administrative share access, as shown above.

Well, of course, you will need to change the IP address above to whatever IP address your computer is having.

How about that Windows XP?
So that's administrative share in Vista for you... So! How do you do the same thing for a Windows XP computer?

From what I have read on various websites this shouldn't be necessary for a Windows XP computer, because administrative shares should be enabled by default. Well not on mine... it doesn't seem to be enabled... because trying to access it prompts for user name and password but when I provide administrative password and username of the remote (Vista) computer, it doesn't accept it. This is the same type behavior I have seen between two Vista computers, before the above mentioned registry edit was made.

I found this blog that says you have to make following edits to the Windows XP registry to enable administrative share.

Quote:

To Enable Admin $ share using Registry and put in login script in AD
Sometime when you push 2012 client to computer and found that some of the PC the Admin$ share is not enable so you are unable to push the client agent to computers.

So you might need to use the Registry key to enable the admin$ share in order to proceed with the Client agent installation.
Below are the Registry key to enable to the Admin$ Share for Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanServer\Parameter s]
"AutoShareWks"=dword:00000001
To Enable the admin$ share for Windows XP and Vista .Copy and paste to notepad and save it to xp.reg file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Syste m]
"LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy"=dword:00000001
To Enable the admin$ share for Windows 7,Copy and paste to notepad and save it to win7.reg file.

you can set it in Group policy so that all the computer will enable the admin$ share.
This guy is referring to AD (active directory), scripting, and 2012 (the Windows Server 2012?) and pushing (as in push installation?) so this doesn't quite seem right. I did try his edit but it didn't solve my problem.

Any other crazy ideas?... anyone?
