I am able to connect to the router and the the internet, it is just that the connect is SUPER slow... like if the page ever loads at all without timing out, it may take 1-5 minutes. Plus it is does this on a hard wired connection as well.
I finally ran some new cat-5 cable and I still have the same issue. I have also noticed that this did seem to affect my Wii-U as well, which is conencted wirelessly to the router. Running the new cable did allow that to work again, though... at least for the time being.
So quick recap - lightning strike; replaced modem and router; molasses slow net connection through wireless and wired - but only on ONE laptop and Wii-U; same laptop works fine at mcDonald's; replaced 50' cat-5; Wii-U seems to be working again; laptop still sloth-slow :( ; surfing my local area network and transferring files is fine.
