The cause could also be a bad driver or the adapter beginning to fail. Install, or reinstall, the latest wireless driver downloaded from the PC manufacturer's web site.

Not a dumb question at all. Yes, the N routers are backwards compatible. Just make sure when configuring them that the wireless mode is set to 'g and n mixed' or something like that (not 'n only').
