When you lose internet access you can still access the router and other devices (both ethernet and Wi-Fi connected) on the LAN?
You can ping a web site and get replies? If so, then what do you mean by "Internet goes down"? Or do you mean something else by "modem/router does not indicate that something is unable to get through"?
