I have attached a screenshot of what a typical home network looks like.
As my colleagues have stated, usually this involves a router sending a wireless signal and each device connecting to it independently of other devices. In other words, in this configuration, there is no reason that because your husband's computer is fried should your tablet not work.
Is this similar to how your home network is setup?
