my home has a 'smart panel' and within it is a Leviton 10/100 4 Port Internet Gateway that cascades to a 4 port Leviton 10/100 Switch. Our cable modem connects directly to the Gateway and from there to all other parts of the home.
Occasionally, we experience internet outages in the home. After having reset (turned off/unplugged) the modem, wifi router, and computer the internet will not come back on until the gateway is unplugged - once I do that everything works again. I believe the problem is heat accumulation in the smart panel/gateway. When I take the panel access cover off, and leave it off, we don't experience any outages.
Sooo, as I'm using a modem that supports 10/100/1000 networking I decided to replace the gateway with a Leviton 10/100/1000 5 Port Switch. I now understand that, obviously, a switch is not a gateway.
My question is, what can I buy to replace the Leviton 10/100 4 Port Internet Gateway in the smart panel in order to take advantage of the 10/100/1000 modem?? OR, does it not even matter that the gateway/router is 10/100/1000???
Please educate the ignorant...
Thanks in advance
