I've now installed a dual-band router in order to try and see if 5ghz solves the problem, and it pretty much did, for now.
But would still be interesting if we could figure out what is the cause of the issue when using the 2.4ghz network.
I forgot to mention I am using a Mac, so drivers are not really an issue. Attached is a snapshot from wifi explorer app.
