Networking my home: topology & advice sought

Hi everyone,

over the Christmas holidays I am embarking on a journey to re-organise my home networking.

There is good reasons: the current Virgin Media Superhub 2 will be getting moved to being completely central to my home, smack bang in the middle.

Into this same space a home server will be getting installed which will be serving media, audio & video connected by ethernet. In addition, the host for my wireless VoIP handsets will be installed here too.

To reduce the massive drain I have on the wireless service (full family here) I plan to shift a number of devices to Ethernet and have the following:

bedroom 1:
2 raspberry Pi units
1 PC

bedroom 2:
Wii (Ethernet adapter)
raspberry pi unit
smart TV

living room:
TiVo
Wii u (Ethernet adapter)
raspberry pi
Xbox 360

on top of this there are numerous wireless devices.

so onto my question. I am in rented accommodation therefore proper wall runs etc are not possible. I intend to route cabling but don't wish to be running batches of 3/4 cables along walls and through holes.

therefore I'm thinking about network topology. would it be acceptable for example, to run a single cat6 cable from a central switch to each room, where another switch can serve the multiple devices?

what kind of devices would be recommended?

thank you in advance for you comments :)
